Aladdin (1987)Macclesfield Local Paper (unknown)From start to finish, this year's pantomimie at Macclesfield's Majestic Theatre is fast moving, funny, and always good entertainment. First night nerves on Monday vanished during the first scene, and soon the audience was putty in the hands of a skillful cast. Following the traditional storyline in which Aladdin (Denise Holian) and Princess Lotus Blosson (Susan Sims) fall in love, but are forces apart until he can become a millionaire, the whole show is a delight to watch. Aladdin and the princess harmonise well together, and wicked Abanazar (Robert Hanson) got nastier and nastier as the night went on. Slapstick routines involving Widow Twankey (David McGuiness) and her laundry assistants, the ebullient Minnie (Carol Dabbs) and dopey Winnie (Shirley Davies) were lapped up by the audience. And both Clarence the Camel (Kevin Clarke and Chris Donnelly) and a street vendor posing as Tommy Cooper (Peter Scott) made the most of their small comic roles. Of course, it all ends happily ever after, but there is healthy sprinkling of mischief and dirty dealing to add excitement. From the dancers to the principal characters, everyone gives their all to this pantomime, which is well worth a visit. Performances continue until tomorrow (Saturday) S.W.
