FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1992)

Macclesfield Majestic Theatre

Producer: Shirley Davies
Choreographer: Carol Dabbs
Musical Director: Keith Yearsley

The Majestic Theatre has a delightful auditorium but, to say the least, very cramped wings. After I had seen the extremely steep steps to traverse, under the stage, (no going round the back here) vertigo is obviously not a problem with this company. Tevye must be fit for the marathon by the end of the week. Producer Shirley Davies handled the therefore difficult entrances and exits of the ensemble very well. The choreography was best in the Inn Scene. Fiddler on the Roof demands a large cast.

Anthony Bowden was a mischievous, sprightly Fiddler. Ron Taylor (The Constable), Tony Slater (Lazar Wolf) and Pauline Baxendale (Yente) were predominant, although young Jonathon Weinberg (Mendel) made an impression as did the singing of Ann Bennett (Fruma-Sarah). Tevye's three older daughters and their suitors, Sheila Gaskell (Tzeitel), Kevin Clarke (Motel), Tracy Chuter (Hodel), Alison Gorton (Chava) and Anthony Longden (Fyedka) were sincere and gave their all with youthful intensity. Andrew Lebeter as Perchik, gave, for me, the best musical number of the evening, polished, romantic and spot on! Deirdre Rogers (Golde) came into her own in Act II in Do You Love Me. As Tevye, Lewis Pritchard's forte was his singing, especially the moving Little Chavala.

Plaudits to lighting engineer Tony Hewitt and his crew for saving the `night' from a very dodgy situation and special congratulations to MMTG on their 21st Anniversary.
