Showboat (1977)

JUBLILIATION at Macclesfield "House full" notices will go up every night this week for the Majestic Theatre Group's most spectacular production yet. The only way now to see the show will be at Saturday's matinee, for which only, 150 seats remain.

lt's a notable success story because this is only thec Society's, seventh public appearance.

With all the coach parties seeming to arrive together last night, there was a brief but extraordinary traffic jam in Mlll Street and the crowding of a company of 80 on the Majestic cinema stage was another capacity achievement.

Again it was an "all our own work" presentation, with most of the costumes and all the scenery home made; the members' safeguard against rising costs.

The casting too was wholly achiev'ed within the society, and the girls notably Maureen Roberts as Julie, Carol Taylor (Magnolia, and Carol Dabbs. (Ellie) took the honours.

Brian Jefferson with a little more definition, could have made Captain Andy the star role, which it really is.

Glynn Taylor's top notes in the singing of Ravenal's role suffered from over amplification by the sound system.

But pnmarily it was the team effort that counted with chorus work outstanding. How the dancers got round the stage limitations, only they know.

John H. Palin again produced with Jean Patterson as choreographer.
